Did you know? Minnesota mining helps fund schools

A large industrial plant with smokestacks emits white smoke near a rocky shoreline, surrounded by green forest, with blue water and a partly cloudy sky in the background.

When most people think of Minnesota mining, they picture the Iron Range, big trucks, skilled crews, and the steady heartbeat of an industry that has powered the region for generations. But what many don’t realize is that mining does more than fuel the economy. It also helps fund public education across the entire state.

Mining’s hidden contribution to Minnesota schools

Through Minnesota’s School Trust Lands, a portion of state-owned land is leased for responsible natural resource development, including iron ore and taconite mining. The lease payments and royalties from these lands are deposited into the Permanent School Fund, which provides long-term financial support for every public school district in Minnesota.

According to the Center of the American Experiment, mining on School Trust Lands contributes millions of dollars each year that support classroom technology, teacher resources, and academic programs for students statewide.

The Iron Ore Alliance notes that Minnesota’s iron mining industry has generated over $700 million, which works out to about $68/year per student statewide. It’s a great reminder that our natural resources are helping to build brighter futures for the next generation.
